The Himrod Eagle Restaurant 3622 Lakemont Himrod Road, Dundee NY
The Himrod Eagle Restaurant has been one of our favorite casual restaurants for years. It has also been one of our recommendations for guests who want a casual, close place that has good food. Recently this popular local spot was sold and is under new ownership by Gage Oughterson, co-owner of Highland Cellars and Finger Lakes Wine Company. One always wonders when new management takes over a popular restaurant, what the results will be.
Even though the new owners technically took over the restaurant a couple of weeks ago, Saturday, February 22 was the Grand Opening and we decided to check it out. We arrived at about 8:20 as the crowd is usually beginning to thin out by then. To our surprise, it was still packed and according to staff, it had been that busy since 5 PM when they opened. We anticipated a little wait but we were seated immediately. As always, we helped ourselves to a complimentary bowl of popcorn from the popcorn machine in the corner.
My understanding is that the chef has not changed and we recognized some of the wait staff from the past ownership. The menu was pretty much the same with a few great specials added. In spite of the overflow crowd someone asked for our drink order as soon as we sat down and brought it quickly. Some of the wine choices by the glass and bottle have changed and I was told they will have a new wine list put together shortly which will include their own wines as well as selections from other local wineries and beyond.
Kelly, Gage’s fiancée, waited on us promptly and we were very impressed with the attention we received, in spite of how busy they were.
We both ordered one of my long-time favorites, the Grilled Salmon with chick peas, rice pilaf, spinach, and goat cheese and it was prepared perfectly. Saturday night is Prime Rib night and if I were a beef person, the delicious-looking plates that I saw delivered to other patrons would have convinced me to order Prime Ribs. Dinner is always served with a side salad and the salads were deliciously prepared with fresh greens.
It was a fun night at the Eagle as always and it was great to see that not much has changed – except for a few new friendly faces.
