It has been a different spring, summer and, now fall, for us. With Mary and Paul Fromm living at Sunrise Landing and doing such a fantastic job running the Bed and Breakfast, I am there only occasionally when Bob and I fill in for them as substitute innkeepers. Bob does visit once or twice a week to complete various tasks but that is vastly different from when we lived there. So, every so often when we find the time, or have a reason to be at Seneca Lake just for fun, it is a real treat. Such was the case one beautiful sunny day in July when we met Mary and Paul and two returning guests visiting Sunrise Landing from Germany. This was Thomas and Holger’s third visit to Sunrise Landing in the twenty years since we opened. Fox Run Winery Café was the perfect place for a reunion.
At the café, one selects lunch at a counter where a multitude of cheeses, meats, and various delicacies are displayed. One can select from the case, the menu, or both. When your lunch is prepared, the buzzer you have been given alerts you that it is ready. You pick up your lunch and select from the many choices for seating. There are tables inside, tables under arbors surrounding the picturesque vineyard, and round umbrella tables out on the second story wrap-around-deck in the front of the winery.
We found a table for six on the deck as it was a perfect day to enjoy our lunch outside. Between the six of us, we all managed to select something different from the varied menu: delicious flat bread pizzas, a variety of sandwiches, and wraps and most come with a salad. Various beverages – beer, soft drinks, plain and sparkling water, and of course Fox Run Wine – are also available.
There is no need to rush your lunch at the cafe. At many table service restaurants, sometimes one feels pushed to make room for another seating. We chatted for hours catching up on each other’s lives since they had last visited. When it was sadly time to say goodbye, a staff member was happy to help us preserve our memories with a photo. It had been a beautiful afternoon and a wonderful reunion.
