Spring 2020 Update and COVID-19

Recently we’ve had some beautiful, sunny days here on Seneca Lake. Looking out at the clear, blue water sparkling in the sunshine, one could almost believe that all is right with the world. Fortunately, we are fine here albeit yearning for normalcy – as are so many people during this unusual time of “stay at home” policies. We are blessed, as we are healthy – and fortunate to have a beautiful spot in which to isolate and stay safe.

As spring has been slowly emerging in spurts from the seemingly never ending frigid weather, we have simultaneously been considering our options regarding our opening for the 2020 season. Just as always, the safety of all of our guests and our staff is our priority as well as the desire to enact policies that are consistent with the public welfare.

We have carefully considered the many issues involved and have decided that Sunrise Landing will not reopen during 2020. We tentatively plan on reopening in the Spring of 2021 and we will keep you updated on that issue.

Here in Yates County as of this writing, we have had 20 positive COVID-19 cases to date and, unfortunately, 4 deaths. However, the actual number of cases will not be known until testing is ramped up. The Finger Lakes region has not yet reopened after the entire state was shut down to all except “essential businesses” eight weeks ago and presently is still officially closed down until May 15.

Reportedly New York State will reopen according to region, in phases, with the businesses posing the least danger of COVID -19 spread, opening first. It will reportedly be a slow, careful process. Simultaneously, a system of testing and contact tracing is being put into place along with careful monitoring to assure that the situation is kept in check.

For many reasons the decision to remain closed for the year has been a difficult one for us. We look forward each year to seeing so many of you – and to welcoming many new guests to Sunrise Landing. We hope we will be able to see you in 2021.

The good news is that, in general, the wineries are open for phone and/or online purchases – and many of them have free or a low, flat-rate shipping.
