Sunrise Landing on Seneca Lake to Begin New Season on April 14 With Reduced Opening Rates.

The beginning of a new season on Seneca Lake is so exciting. Spring is in the air, the lake and the sky are a gorgeous blue, and the robins are busy finding twigs to build their nests.  At Sunrise Landing we are also busy getting ready for a new season to begin April 14. Spring Cleaning has been well on its way with all the essentials of the deep cleaning we do each year at the beginning of the season. Bob has been taking down the fencing that was put up in the fall to keep the deer  and other wildlife from feasting on our landscaping - and on the inside painting and giving extra attention to any nicks or scratches that need his attention. We ...

Graft, A Watkins Glen Wine and Cider Bar

Now that Sunrise Landing is closed until mid April, the innkeepers can do a little exploring of their own.  Having begun that mission in earnest - we have made a wonderful discovery - Graft! It's one of the newest sensations in Watkins Glen. The decor is chic and the food extremely creative. They offer an extensive menu of small bites but most plates are meant to be shared by two. The chef is Christina McKeough who was the original owner of Hazelnut Kitchen in Trumansburg.   Our first visit, Bob and I  stuck to our favorites - we both had a classic Caesar Salad made with whole romaine leaves, and served with Garlic Toast. We also  shared a ...

New Philosophy at Suzanne Fine Regional Cuisine

The landmark Townsend home, built in 1903,  was carefully transformed into a restaurant by Robert and Suzanne Stack and opened over a decade ago as Suzanne Fine Regional Cuisine. Two downstairs lake-facing rooms were converted into one cozy dining room offering magnificent views of Seneca Lake. An adjoining,  private library room with its table for ten and a wall of 300 cookbooks and Provençal pottery collection offered a private setting for small groups or parties, and a lovely lake view.  It is in this intimate and elegant setting that Suzanne  created her inimitable cuisine and she and Bob and their loyal and attentive staff have built the ...

Josh Fox visits Watkins Glen and Sunrise Landing

Thanks to grassroots coordinator Lee Ziesche,  and local organizer Leala Farnsworth, Oscar-Nominated and Emmy-Winning filmmaker and activist, Josh Fox,  brought his tour to The Glen Theater in Watkins Glen on Monday, March 2nd. The Solutions Grassroots Tour, "A Solar Home Companion" looks at the impacts of fossil fuel development and provides an alternate vision of sustainability for  the future.  As the title implies, Solar Home Companion is an old fashioned variety show lightly modeled on Garrison Keillor's  Prairie Home Companion.  Using music, stories, and  film sequences, it provides a vision and strategy for developing renewable energy ...

Innkeepers Visit Glenora for Tasting and Tour

While Sunrise Landing is closed for "Inn Keeper renewal and Inn refurbishment", we take every opportunity to visit some of the exciting spots we recommend to our guests the rest of the year. Last Sunday, along with long-time  friends from Rochester, Casey and Mary Ellen Lopata, we had two special treats at Glenora Wine Cellars. We had read about their concrete egg tanks for fermenting wine and were eager to see them. The staff warmly greeted us as always and were happy to give us a mini tour before our Chocolate and Wine tasting. Breanna took us down into the wine cellar. We passed through the room containing the familiar huge stainless steel vats ...

Poached Pears in Chambord

This is a favorite breakfast starter at Sunrise Landing, but works as a light dessert, as well. 4 large pears, peeled, cut in half and cored 4 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons Chambord (raspberry liquor) 4 tablespoons white wine 2 tablespoons blueberries 2 tablespoons raspberries cheddar, bleu, or feta cheese. Place the pears cored side up in glass baking dish. Mix sugar, cinnamon, Chambord and wine and pour over the pears. Divide berries among pears. Cover and microwave on high for 10 minutes (adjust time depending on how ripe the pears are - the harder the pears, the longer they will need to be cooked). Serve ...
